January is Radon Action Month

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, and the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. About 350 individuals die each year in Colorado alone due to lung cancer attributed to radon.  San Juan Basin Health Department together with the Colorado State Extension Office are offering free presentations on how to protect your home and family from radon gas. Participants will receive a free radon testing kit.  Read more »

Opportunities to Recycle Christmas Trees

La Plata County is accepting Christmas trees at a drop-off location at the intersection of Highway 160 and C.R. 141 (Wildcat Canyon Rd) through January 27, 2012.
The City of Durango will be collecting Christmas trees for recycling at Santa Rita Park—in the gravel area near the large playground through January 31, 2012.

Assessor’s Office to Send Requests for Information on the Agricultural Use of Properties

On  January 1, 2012, Colorado House Bill 11-1146 became effective and clarifies the requirements for the agricultural classification of land that underlies residential improvements.  The bill requires that the residential improvements on agricultural land be “integral” to the agricultural operation for the land underlying the residence in order for the property to be classified agricultural. La Plata County Board of County Commissioners Appoints New Chair

At their January 3, 2012 Special Business meeting the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners appointed Commissioner Robert A. (Bobby) Lieb, Jr. as Chair of the Board for 2012. Commissioner Wallace (Wally) White was named Vice-Chair. Commissioner Lieb replaces outgoing chair, Commissioner Kellie C. Hotter. Chair of the Board is a one-year rotating position.
