On November 15, 2004, the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners adopted Resolution 2004-33 which created the La Plata County Historic Register. A three member Historic Preservation Review Commission was appointed to further Historic Preservation in the county and to advise the elected officials.

The County Planning Department and the County Clerk and Recorder maintain the La Plata County Historic Register. Sites are accepted to the Register by recommendation from the Historic Preservation Review Commission, to the Board of County Commissioners and are adopted by Resolution.
