Ella Vita Trail Re-Opened
The trails at and around the former Durango landfill, located adjacent to Overend Mountain Park, have been re-opened. Minor erosion control activities will continue through the rest of this week, but all trails will remain open.
The Ella Vita trail had been closed for safety reasons while La Plata County constructed drainage improvements in the area. Read more »
La Plata County Commissioners Enact Fire Restrictions
Due to the extremely dry conditions in La Plata County and the serious threat of fire danger that these conditions impose, the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners today enacted restrictions on open burning in areas of La Plata County that are south of U.S. Highway 160. Read more »
Commissioners to Consider Amendment to the La Plata County Land Use Code, Chaper 78, "Floods"
The La Plata County Planning and Building Departments are pleased to announce the completion of a four-year Floodplain Map Modification Project which included digital conversion of existing floodplain maps, incorporation of new and existing floodplain data, and creation of approximate flood hazard zones for the La Plata, lower Animas, and Florida Rivers in La Plata County. Also included in the Floodplain Map Modification Project was the complete re-study of Vallecito Creek north of Vallecito Reservoir. Read more »
Medical Marijuana Land Use Applications Must Be Submitted by June 30,2010
On June 22, 2010, the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners temporarily lifted the moratorium on land use applications for medical marijuana businesses in La Plata County. The moratorium will be reimposed on July 1, 2010. Read more »

Temporary Closure of County Road 246 Due to Red Creek Fire
The La Plata Road and Bridge Department and Office of Emergency Management in conjunction with San Juan Public Lands officials are restricting public access on C.R. 246 and into Red Creek as a result of the Red Creek Fire. For safety reasons, no public access will be allowed onto C.R. 246 and into the burn area. This closure has been prompted by the firefighting activities and heavy air traffic in the fire area. Draft 2 Released for Proposed Technical Revisions to La Plata County's Oil and Gas Natural Resources Code
Durango, CO – In January 2010, La Plata County’s Natural Resources Team completed proposed technical revisions to Chapter 90 of La Plata County’s Land Use Code which outlines the County’s regulations regarding the development of oil and natural gas resources in La Plata County. The revisions were designed to address technical issues identified through the process of implementing the new Chapter 90 code, as adopted by the Board of County Commissioners on November 18, 2008 and effective January 1, 2009.
