Keep your trash away from prowling bears!

La Plata County is home to many a bear and other critters who share our space. In order to keep these animals and our citizens safe, we ask county residents and businesses to store trash in a manner that makes it unavailable to bears and other wildlife.

If wildlife accesses your trash, and you receive a notice of violation, you are required to store trash in a wildlife-resistant trash container or a secure structure and abide by schedules for placing trash containers out for collection.

For those who do not have wildlife-resistant containers now, several waste-haulers in the county now offer them!

La Plata County Animal Control began enforcing the wildlife-resistant trash ordinance in June 2018. Fines are:

• $200 for a first offense

• $300 for a second offense

• $500 for subsequent violations.

Fines may be waived by obtaining a wildlife- resistant trash container.
