Online documents - Are your recorded documents online?

Yes.

La Plata county has records on-line visit https://papervision.laplata.co.us to view our recorded documents. Please note: you will be unable to print any documents unless you have an account with us. To obtain copies you must be on-site or send in a request along with payment. If you are interested in setting up an account please contact our office at 970-382-6281 or 970-382-6283.

How are my registration/renewal fees calculated?

The notice you receive when it is time to renew your license lists information about your vehicle, the Taxable Value (TX VAL), the License Fee (LIC.FEE) and the Specific Ownership Tax (OWN.TX)

Taxable Value: This is calculated using a percentage of the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) and remains constant throughout the life of the vehicle.  The taxable value of passenger cars is 85% of the MSRP; the taxable value of a truck is 75% of the MSRP. Read more »

Foreclosure Properties - Where do I get a list of foreclosure properties?

Although foreclosure documents are recorded with us in this office we do not have a "list" of such properties.  The Public Trustee's office has a web site that you can view current foreclosure properties:  http://ptforeclosures.laplata.co.us/index.aspx.  For further information on foreclosures please call the Public Trustee Office (970) 382-6352.

Zoning - How is my property zoned?

La Plata County uses a permit, or performance zoning, system to determine suitability of land uses.  The system generally allows one dwelling unit per lot without a land use permit and requires compatibility review for any additional development.

The closest thing to “traditional” zoning in the unincorporated areas of La Plata County is in the Animas Valley, from the North edge of Durango up to the Baker’s Bridge area.  Land Use Permits are still required.   Read more »

Late fee - Is there a late fee if I do not register my vehicle?

Yes.

  • Purchase - Vehicles must be registered within 60 days from the date of purchase to avoid late fee.
  • Renewal - There is a one month grace period, after the month grace there is a late fee.
  • Late fees - $25 for each month or portion of a month that a vehicle is not registered after the one month grace period, not to exceed $100, will be charged.

Birth Certificates - Where do I get birth certificates?

The Clerk and Recorders Office does not issue or keep records of births in La Plata you will need to contact San Juan Basin Health (970) 247-5702 ext. 108.

Building Department - What does the Building Department do?

The structural integrity of buildings and the safety of building occupants are paramount concerns of the La Plata County Building Department. For this reason, building codes have been enforced since 1973. In 2004, the Building Department issued 1064 building permits. Building officials conducted 5620 on-site inspections of residential and commercial property and traveled nearly 102,292 miles to ensure compliance with our building codes.
