How do I go about getting a Concealed Weapon permit (CCW)?

In order to obtain a concealed weapons permit, you must first obtain and complete the proper application from the La Plata County Sheriff's Office. Ride-along with a Sheriff Deputy: How do I sign up?

How do I sign up for a ride-along with a Sheriff's Deputy?

The La Plata County Sheriff's Office ride-along program offers the opportunity for interested citizens to observe the patrol function of the office by accompanying a Deputy Sheriff on a regular tour of duty.   Any person 18 years of age or older may request to participate in the ride-along program by completing an application to participate and submitting it to the Patrol Division at least one week prior to the requested date.   A waiver, release and indemnification form must be signed. Fingerprints: Will the Sheriff's Office do Fingerprints for the Public?

Will the Sheriff's Office do fingerprints for the public?

We do fingerprints at the Sheriff's Office every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.   You must have a photo identification and provide your own fingerprint cards.   There is a fee of $7.50 for the first card and $10.00 for 2 cards.

Bonding: How do I bond someone out of Jail?

In order to bond a person out of jail, first find out from the court or from the Detentions' staff the amount of the bond, if any. Also ask if the bond is a "cash of the defendant only" bond, or if a commercial bonding company can be used.


You then have two major options. You can bring the amount of the bond to the jail in cash, (no checks accepted) or you can contact a commercial bondsman (listed in the yellow pages) and see what they would charge you to post a bond. Read more »

Background Check: Can I get a background check done on myself or someone else?

Can I get a background check done on myself or someone else?

The La Plata County Sheriff's Office can do a local records check for La Plata County for a cost of $10.  If a more extensive search is desired, you can go to www.cbirecordscheck.com and for a fee, you can obtain the state criminal history from Colorado Bureau of Investigations. You will need the name and date of birth for the person you are inquiring about.

You can come to the Sheriff's Administrative Office at 742 Turner Drive in Durango on Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. You will be asked to fill out an Application for the Release of Public Records form.  Usually, only cases in which the criminal reports have been closed can be released to the public. Customers must show photo identification. There is a charge of $1 for the first page of the report and $.50 for each additional page. Read more »

Does La Plata County have a Reserve Deputy Program?

Yes, we currently have a Reserve Deputy program. They work in all three Divisions and their duties vary from covering for short shifts, to long distant transports, courthouse security assistance, to major events and crime scene security. Volunteers are a very big asset to our agency.
