How are my registration/renewal fees calculated?
The notice you receive when it is time to renew your license lists information about your vehicle, the Taxable Value (TX VAL), the License Fee (LIC.FEE) and the Specific Ownership Tax (OWN.TX)
Taxable Value: This is calculated using a percentage of the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) and remains constant throughout the life of the vehicle. The taxable value of passenger cars is 85% of the MSRP; the taxable value of a truck is 75% of the MSRP. Read more »
Late fee - Is there a late fee if I do not register my vehicle?
Yes.
- Purchase - Vehicles must be registered within 60 days from the date of purchase to avoid late fee.
- Renewal - There is a one month grace period, after the month grace there is a late fee.
- Late fees - $25 for each month or portion of a month that a vehicle is not registered after the one month grace period, not to exceed $100, will be charged.
Driver's License - Can I renew my driver's license at the motor vehicle office?

Sales Tax - What is the sales tax rate in La Plata County?
Our State Sales Tax rate is 2.9%. The La Plata County Sales Tax on motor vehicle purchases is based on where you take possession. If you purchase outside La Plata County the 2% County tax does not apply. Purchases within La Plata County result in an additional 2% Tax. If you reside in Durango City limits an additional 3% city sales tax is due.
VIN Inspection: Where would I get a VIN inspection?
La Plata County Motor Vehicles has an inspector on-site (Durango office only): Those hours are Monday - Friday: 8am -11:30am & 12pm – 4pm.
Please call ahead to verify that the inspector is available, (970) 382-7075.
Any Colorado licensed dealer can do VIN inspections.
