Wildlife - What do I need to know about La Plata County wildlife?

Wildlife is WILD and should never be approached or disturbed on purpose. The Colorado Department of Wildlife, or DOW, has some great information on animal encounters. Most wildlife will avoid people but we live in their natural habitat and will sometimes have encounters. Deer, elk, skunks and raccoons are common throughout the region and can be found crossing roads anywhere. Black bears (which come in every color from blonde, cinnamon, brown and black) are a big concern both in town and in the back country. Read more »

The Living with Wildlife Advisory Board (LWAB) is your resource for conflict with wildlife in La Plata County. In most situations, people and wildlife can coexist. Frequently, there are simple steps and non-evasive methods to deter wildlife from damaging your property.
