FAQs - County Attorney

County Attorney - Can I speak to the County Attorney about a legal problem I am having?

The County Attorney may answer questions regarding the applicability of the La Plata County Code and other relevant state laws to particular situations involving the County but does not give legal advice or assistance to the general public.

Is the County Attorney the same as the District Attorney or the Public Defenders office?

No.  The County Attorney is appointed by the Board of County Commissioners to represent the interests of La Plata County.  The District Attorney is an elected official who prosecutes criminal cases and provides assistance and advocacy to victims of crime.  The Public Defender's office provides legal representation for indigent individuals who are charged with the commission of a crime in Colorado.

Legal advice - Where can I get legal advice?

Please check the local phone book for attorney listings or Colorado Legal Services, http://coloradolegalservices.org providing self-help information for civil legal matters, where to find no or low- cost legal help, court information and other referral information.
