 Spring and Summer Activities!

Come Alive Outside Challenge – La Plata County 4-H Giving Back Garden

La Plata County 4-H is sponsoring a garden plot and pumpkin patch at the Old Fort Lewis Research Station in Hesperus.  This community engagement project aims to encourage youths to get outside, get dirty and have fun learning about growing fresh vegetables.  The vegetables produced will be distributed to local families in need of fresh produce and through the USDA Commodity Foods distribution program.  The goal is to give back to our community through local food.  Hopefully, it will also encourage more people to eat and grow more vegetables for their diets.  We will be using no-spray and no artificial fertilizers on our vegetables.  In addition, the pumpkin patch will be harvested for a Halloween Celebration the last Saturday in October.  This fun for the entire family event will bring the community together to celebrate our rich agricultural heritage.

So, let’s get dirty!  Since this is a community project, we invite all 4-H Clubs or other youth serving organizations the opportunity to help out.  This could be a great after-school activity.  We need workers for a variety of different tasks throughout the growing season. We plan to provide educational opportunities at work days to promote local agriculture to young agrarians.  We also will supply the tools and other equipment needed.  We can also provide transportation (up to 10 people) from Durango to the Old Fort in Hesperus and back.  Please check out the schedule and call me at the Extension office (Greg – 970-382-6460) to organize a work day.  Keep on growing.
