Public Safety

The Mission of the La Plata County Sheriff's Office Public Safety Division:

To Protect life and property, and provide equal justice to all.

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Division employs twenty-nine (29) certified Sheriff's deputies: one Lieutenant, two Sergeants, three Corporals and twenty-two Deputies, and are directed by a David Griggs.

The Sheriff’s Office divides La Plata County into four (4) districts that encompass almost 1800 square miles from San Juan County to the north, the New Mexico state line to the south, Montezuma County to the west and Archuleta County to the east. Patrol deputies conduct the initial criminal investigations on a variety of calls, including crimes against persons, crimes against property and warrant arrest. They enforce DUI and traffic offense violations on county roads and when appropriate on the state highways. They are also available to assist the local fire, ambulance and law enforcement agencies in the county.

In 2009, Deputies responded to over 20,000 calls for service.
